SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL CLASP 1878 AND CAPE OF GOOD HOPE MEDAL TO CAPTAIN W.M. SCHENK-FORMERLY CAPE FIELD ARTILLERY
South Africa Medal clasp 1878
Named to: 1ST C.PTE.W.M.SCHENK.C.F.ARTY
Medal better than very fine (please note, probably a jeweller has added a hyphen and 9 to 1878 to make it look like an 1878-79 clasp)
Correctly named and confirmed on roll as being entitled to an 1878 clasp.
Cape of Good Hope Medal, clasps: BASUTOLAND/BECHUANALAND.
Medal about very fine.
Named to: CAPT.W.M.SCHENK.CAPE POLICE D.I.
Please note: CAPT and M and CAPE POLICE D.I. have been very neatly re-engraved in the correct style.
We note that Sergeant W.M. Schenk is on the Cape of Good Hope Medal roll for The Cape Mounted Riflemen and entitled to these two clasps. The "S" of Sergeant can still be made out.
Captain Schenk was also entitled to a Queens South Africa and Kings South Africa Medal named to Captain W.M. Schenk Cape Police D.I. and was mentioned in despatches on September 10th 1901.
Schenk obviously thought he was entitled to an 1878-79 clasp and had it altered, and changed his rank and unit on the Cape Medal.
